Support the posties

I support the postal workers' strike, and sealed the letterbox on Friday in case of scab post. Fortunately no scabs were posted through our letterbox. What on earth are they supposed to do? It's a service - our friend who's a postman takes pride in chatting to the old ladies on his round, checking the house for people who're on holiday etc. His management are bullies, and this article sets out some of the problems.

Things I love about autumn

Wow, it's so mild lots of the things from summer still apply. But I'll add:
  • Fresh figs, chestnuts, blackberries
  • A chill in the air
  • Snuffling hedgehogs getting ready for hibernation
  • Fieldfares, redwings & mistle thrushes arrive
  • Autumn colours on the trees
  • Telly gets better! This month it's new Peep Show, new Curb, Tru Blood, Generation Kill

Keeping the faith

I find that using the internet to support causes and find like-minded people is something of an antidote to the depressing effects of the daily news. My glass half-empty approach means that despair is never far away when I hear about bank bonuses (full stop, when pay is frozen for most people), oil companies dumping toxic waste, developed world stalling on climate change yada yada yada. But little bits of engagement with this, talking to others, supporting web campaigns etc helps keep me sane.

jamie goode's wine blog: Cork on TV: forest in a bottle

jamie goode's wine blog: Cork on TV: forest in a bottle

Cork is the green choice. Unfortunately my favourite wine - NZ sauv blanc is almost all in screw caps. I want to find an alternative, not having much luck so far.

Finding cork stoppers:
Can search Majestic wine with 'natural cork' then search within results to select bottles.

Things I love about summer:
  • Not having to wear socks, and still having warm feet
  • Sunflowers
  • Sitting outside the pub in the evening
  • Having breakfast outside at the weekend
  • Raspberries, peaches & nectarines
  • Quiet roads on the way to work

Went twitter mad

Went twitter mad at work today. Watched streamed conference, tweeted & read tweets at same time. Very tiring. It's an interesting way to engage with ideas though. What also interests me is whether this provides a more effective way of learning. I've always felt my education has been about fact-cramming. I was good at school because I have a good memory for facts. Subsequently I've been a serial student. I did a language degree (1985-89), and I don't remember having to use much critical thought then. Then I did a speech therapy degree (1991-1993), which must have required critical thought, but also felt very theoretical and far removed from what then happened when I became a practitioner. Then I did an IT conversion course (1998-1999) which was focused on passing. Again, in the 'real world' it didn't seem to relate much, although I think it was a good background to working in that field. I am able to think critically, but that seems a result of my personality rather than a trained skill. However, I would say that a university education is useful culturally, I believe that it should not be about training the workforce but about stretching people's minds, and giving the space for blue sky thinking. Don't know whether that will be the case in future though.
